“Martin Scorsese’s World Cinema Project”

Martin Scorsese’s work as a documentarian, preservationist, and curator over the last two decades is unimpeachable. Serving in the latter two roles, Scorsese co-founded in 2007 the World Cinema Foundation, which restores and distributes films from parts of the world underrepresented in global film culture. The organization was renamed the World Cinema Project in 2009, and has to date restored over two-dozen films. Criterion has released a box set (the first in what is promised to be a series) of six films from countries ranging from Mexico to Morocco. The results are varied, in the best sense of the word. Each film is entertaining, moving, and technically brilliant in unique ways.
