Below there are three manuals available, both of which are available in either html or pdf formats. The manuals were written by me while I was at Loughborough University. The projectionist’s manual has been shown to a number of people in the industry, including projectionists who have thought that it was very good. While the manuals are specific to the student cinema at Loughborough (Flix – Loughborough Student Cinema) many of the preciples and concepts explained can be used in a wider context.

Both the Film Tech and Film Center websites provide a large number of technical manuals. The Film Center provide a large number which are also available to buy on CDROM. If you want details of a specific projector then these are the two sites to have a look at.

Facts About Projection (Third edition) – This is a fantastic little training video about projection from 1975, but is still relevant today and nicely explains how projectors work. The only down side is that it mainly focuses on 16mm film.

Film Center – this is a great site, containing lots and lots of information. Everything from manuals, to charts, parts, screens, film collecting and more. Worth looking at.

Film-Tech – considered to be one of the best technical websites on the net, it provides discussions forums and a huge number of manuals, available to download.

Jessops instruction manual site – This site has 1000’s of manuals available to download, some relating to cameras, some to cine cameras and some for projectors.

KiwiCareers – Cinema Projectionist – career information provided by Kiwi Careers service, and provides lots of detailed information about the role

LnL Website – Provides some good basic information about being a projectionist

Problems of a Projectionist – Lewis M. Townsend, Projection Engineer, Eastman Theatre and Eastman School of Music, University of Rochester talks about some of the problems that a projectionist may experience.

Projection Training – The purpose of this site is to provide a one-stop-shop for anyone who wants to find out about a career in cinema projection, information relating to the operation and maintenance of projection equipment and training available for both new and experienced projectionists.

Sound Recording and Reproduction (Sound on Film) (Video) (External) – Explains the mysteries of sound recording on film. 1943

The 16mm Motion Picture Projector: Operating Techniques (Video) – Training film for military projectionists from 1961.

The Advanced Projection Manual – The Advanced Projection Manual is designed to provide cinema engineers and projectionists with the necessary technical know-how and hands-on advice so that classic films can be presented the way they were intended to be presented, without compromises with regard to image or sound. Among the core topics are film and sound formats, 70mm film projection and 3-D film projection. The book also includes an introduction to electronic and digital projection technologies.
