Cinema chains left reeling by video-on-demand releases

Chains threaten to ban Universal Pictures films that get a streaming launch at the same time they are shown on the big screen.

Irish cinema chains are vowing to boycott Universal Pictures over its plans to release films on streaming services and in theatres at the same time.

Last week AMC Theatres, which owns 11 Odeon cinemas in Ireland, announced a ban on Universal movies across its sites. Cineworld, which operates a 17-screen cineplex in Dublin, has also threatened to stop showing Universal films that do not respect the theatrical window.
