More than 1,000 handmade flowers cascade down the local church in Barley, Hertfordshire, following a project which brought the whole community together.

The spectacular efforts to build the display were started by retired art and textiles teacher Alison White, 64, in February this year.

Speaking to HertsLive, Alison said: “We were all plunged into lockdown. We couldn’t see an end to it and I thought we needed something that everybody can do to give us a focus and something to look forward to.”

The village community knitted, crocheted and stitched 1,452 flowers to drape over St Margaret of Antioch church near Royston.
